Alaska has many companies that use .NET for their production web sites and desktop uses. Many of these organizations started with Visual Basic (VB6) in the late 90's, and have evolved their system to the current .NET platform. Alaska is typical of other states, in that web-based development is divided between .NET and Java for enterprise systems, and .NET, Java, ColdFusion, PHP, and other development environemnts for mid and smaller web sites.
If you are using .NET, there is a choice to develop in C#, VB, or a host of other languages. We have found that most organizations adopt C# because it is easier to find staff proficient in the C family of languages. We do see about 1/3 of our clients using VB; mostly because of legacy code bases in VB6. In day to day use and performance, there is virtually no difference between the two.
In Alaska, for enterprise systems, there does seem to be a bias toward Microsoft solutions. The Municipality of Anchorage and the State of Alaska both use .NET as one of their main, standard, development environments. Many small businesses also find that .NET can be cost-effective. .NET will never be a god choice for static web sites, but if the site involves a database, business process, or workflow, then .NET is the way to go.
Alaska has internet access that can vary greatly from City to Village, but most connections are fast enough to do remote work. We have done projects all around Alaska, including Anchorage (our home office), Fairbanks, Barrow, Juneau, Kodiak, and many other locations. We can come to your location to get a project done, or remotely do development.
.NET is one of the development languages of choice for high usage sites and sites with complex business rules and workflows. Because it is a compiled language, it can be many times faster than PHP, ColdFusion, or other languages. The newest version of .NET comes with Visual Studio 2010, an advanced software development environment, that makes developming software an order of magnitude easier than it was 10 years ago.
Within Visual Studio, you can develop in a number of languages. C# and VB.NET are the most common, and GeoNorth is proficient in either. You may have also heard of ASP.NET, which is the 'web design' portion of .NET, and works in conjunction with C# or VB.NET.
If you want a fast site that can scale, or if you have complex business rules that need a lot of CPU power behind them, .NET is the way to go.
Many of our clients in Alaska use .NET, and it can be used in both enterprise applications and smaller, 1 man shops, or even handheld applications.
GeoNorth's staff includes Microsoft certified developers who will get your project done right, whether its a Windows mobile or enterprise application. We have developers located in both Anchorage, Alaska and Portland, Oregon. Some of the certifications our developers hold include: MCPD Enterprise Application Developer, MCTS Web Development, MCTS Distributed Applications, MCTS Windows Development, MCTS Sharepoint, and MCTS SQL Server.
Although we have done many hand-held device and Windows applications, most .NET solutions these days are web sites. We have developed a framework for web components that allows us to quickly create applications that use web services, on-line payment options, online stores, and Google-map enabled applications. .NET web sites are not only about C#; they also need expert knowledge in HTML, Javascipt, SQL, SOAP, XMP, and many other technologies. You can count on our expertise in all of these disciplines and more -- we deal with them every day.
But Microsoft certification and lots of practice is not enough for us! We also have an internal program for process and standards that ensures our developers can produce consistent, solid web sites and applications for you.
Over its 17 year history, GeoNorth has developed a consistent project approach which includes its development methodology, proven sets of communication tools, the latest technology, and a strong technical team. We focus on earning client satisfaction and pride ourselves on consistently delivering exceptional responsiveness and successful projects.
Our management plan for this project includes clear lines of communication, a task completion matrix, issue tracking, project meetings as needed, and weekly progress reports.
We are always available to discuss your project, and you can expect clear progress reports and timely updates of the following:
* Project deliverable status: project percent complete and individual task break down
* Risks list and current mitigation progress
* Issues/bug tracking and resolutions
* Change Request tracking
